Yarn Both samples use yarns that are light and fluffy, this is intentional as it means your scarf will not be stiff and heavy so keep this in mind when looking for alternatives. Blown, unspun and multiple strands of fluffy lace/fingering weight yarns are great choices. Avoid yarns that are 100% merino, alpaca or cotton when using a single strand as these will be very heavy. If using mutiple strands, the given meterage applies to each strand.
