Construction
The Midland Neck is worked flat from right side to left. Starting with an icord cast on, short rows are worked to shape the shoulder cap followed by increases to shape the back neck including a faux shoulder seam throughout. The front right neckline is worked with short rows followed by the back panel. Next the front panel is worked followed by the left side neck, shoulder shaping and shoulder cap mimicking the opposite side. An icord bind off finishes the main piece. Stitches are picked up at the neckline and turtle neck is worked in 1x1 rib in the round with either a relaxed of snuggly fit. A schematic is included to help you visualise the construction. Please note it is not to scale and your proportions may look slightly different.
Sizing
Size ranges are a suggestion, always go by your own measurements. Model wears size S (relaxed collar) and has a shoulder span of 37.5cm / 14.75”. If in doubt, size up for child and teen, size down for adults.
Gauge and yarn
Always make sure to gauge swatch to ensure your neck fits and you like the fabric you’ve created. Unlike most patterns, your stitch gauge will dictate the length of your neck/dickie and your row gauge will dictate the width. If using a drapey fibre like alpaca, it’s better to go with the snuggly neck option. If you have a high wool content go with the relaxed neck option.
Child sample uses one strand of Filcolana Arwetta (210 m/50 g) in Natural White held with one strand of Cheshire Yarn Suri Alpaca (400m/50g) in ‘Popsicle’.
Adult sample uses Filcolana Arwetta (210 m/50 g) in ‘Ballerina’ held with The Fibre Co Cirro (225m/50g) in ‘Graceful’.
